This question is no completely understood. However, some scientists believe that yawning is an ancient instinct designed to shift our entire body out if one state and into another (e.g. sleepy to awake). Just so you know, one thing that is certain is that yawning is not related to lack of oxygen, otherwise we'd be uncontrollably yawning during athletics

good point about the athletics thing at the end. and shifting to another state is what I think it is.

we yawn unconciously because we aren't getting enough oxygen to our brain. If you notice, when you yawn you tend to take in a deep breath. AS for yawns being contagious, i keep saying I'll look into it but don't xD
