but are they even that strong? sure the other guy took out grimjow easily, but they couldn't even hold ichigo back properly when he was trying to control the inner hollow.

That is mainly because they were up against Ichigo and that Hollow was using Ichigo's body and they didn't want to risk hurting Ichigo.
