the version i know is: mary's uncle had three nieces; one is called April, one is called May; what is the third one called?
and for the current riddle...he stole it (the car). Oh, and for my usual grammer and language contradictions...here we go...
The riddle is deliberately made to decieve. If he did in fact pay for the car, the correct grammar would be "...,and he didn't pay a penny...". "But" is used when the second clause contradicts the primary clause, and "and" is used when the second clause supports the primary clause. As the thing about pennies doesn't contradict the main clause, the correct conjunction would be "and", not "but".
But anyway, its not your fault. That riddle was designed like that anyway...

ArkAngel, the riddle has been answered above.
Now, my turn:
In this world, you can have buses not trains No students, nor teachers. Animals but no plants, Children but no adults, Life but no death. What is the law of the world?
I'll put another one, this one is called 'Yes/No' In a game you may choose 'Yes' or 'No'. There are ten players. You be be playing in an elimination format. The game is 'Majority Rule' (where the players who have the majority will win and proceed onto the next round. OH NO! What if some people are planted in the crowd to make one team win? You are to solve this problem, what do you suggest?
